The teaching of history in the United States was radically changed during the Progressive Era, and ever since. The aim has not been to teach the past so students could draw their conclusions, but instead to teach the history in such a way that would favor the conclusions they (the Progressive reformers) held, based on specific world views and/or their ideologies. Progressives were using plays from the pages of communist playbooks, wittingly or unwittingly.
“The development of civilization, asserted a whole battery of historians, including both Turner and Beard, must be charted with a keen eye for the shaping role of economic forces and the incidence of class conflicts. History, the New Historians argued, is not a celebration of past heroes but an instrument for controlling the future.
American political thinkers in the Progressive era were looking for a theory of the state, of the nature of government, that would satisfy the demands of modernist realism and at the same time strengthen the aspirations and strategies of progressivism.”
